Many Research Development (RD) professionals face heavy workload and dea
dline pressures, resulting in a high risk of burnout. To tackle these chall
enges, RD professionals can “right-size” the scope of their work by strateg
ically re-designing their work to improve sustainability (i.e. reduce burno
ut risk) while maintaining or improving their satisfaction and effectivenes
s. We represent an RD office that began a comprehensive “right-scoping” eff
ort in 2018 using an iterative, data-driven process-improvement approach. We are now applying lessons learned and creating materials to improv
e office sustainability and enhance staff on-boarding and professi
onal development.
Through a combination of pre-work, real-time presen tation and interaction, and post-work, we will use the framework and resour ces of our right-scoping process to guide participants through crucial step s for reconsidering their own work. Attendees will create their own paths forward to address their individual situations, identifying their challenge s and goals, important partners, sharable knowledge, key work processes, an d next steps toward more sustainable RD work. This online event will be rel evant to NORDP members of all career levels and at all institution types wh o find themselves wanting to formally reconsider how they carry out their R D responsibilities.
