Navigating a Career in Research Development without a Doctorate
Presenters: Katherine Duggan, Brown University; Kim Patten, University of Arizona; Erik Davidshofer, University of Kentucky

‘Where do you see yourself in five years?’ This common interview question is always tricky to answer, but for the ~58% of Research Development professionals who do not have doctorate degrees, it can feel particularly loaded. At this one-hour presentation, hear NORDP members from across the country discuss their career trajectories to date and where they see their careers going in the future. Then join in on the discussion and learn actionable strategies and resources for making the most of the skills you have in order to advance your career in this competitive field. (Intermediate)

"we need a newsletter!"
Presenters: Ryan Champagne, University of Pittsburgh; Susan Emerson, Oregon State University; Faye Farmer, Arizona State University; Antje Harnisch, Worcester Polytechnic Institute; Brittany Ryan, University of Iowa

“We need a newsletter!” However, creating an email that your audience will read is another matter entirely. Join an interactive session that will cover the ins and outs of creating a data-driven Research Development newsletter that can be tailored to your individual institutional needs. You will leave with a checklist of do’s and don'ts as well as examples from all sizes and types of institutions. (Intermediate)

Building and Leveraging Partnerships: How to Advance Research Information Management Systems (RIMS) to Catalyze Research
Presenters: Jeff Agnoli, The Ohio State University; Rebecca Bryant, OCLC (Online Computer Library Center); Kate Byrne, Symplectic

RD professionals are familiar with expert finders systems (Research Information Management Systems). This panel will explore how the Ohio Department of Higher Education's platform, Ohio Innovation Exchange, is driving innovation and industry engagement across Ohio's research universities. Panelists will also share their experiences and best practices from the perspectives of an R1 Research University (The Ohio State University), vendor/client solutions provider (Symplectic), and OCLC (a global library cooperative that provides shared technology services, original research and community programs for its membership and the library community at large). Participants will have opportunities to engage with this expert panel. (Intermediate)

MENTORING LIGHTNING STORM
Presenters: Samarpita Sengupta, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center; Hilda McMackin, Vanderbilt University; Jessica Moon, Stanford University

Lightning strikes for the fourth time! This fast-paced session, with time for questions and answers, is designed to share a lot of information in a little bit of time and encourage ah-ha moments. Join NORDP colleagues as they share personal perspectives and mentoring experiences. Topics will be geared toward multiple levels of expertise, and applicable to any mentoring relationship, inside or outside of NORDP. Everyone with an interest in mentoring will find new information to apply to their own work. (Intermediate)

ADVANCING COMMUNITY-ENGAGED SCHOLARSHIP: WHERE CAN RD PROFESSIONALS PLAY A ROLE?
Presenters: Jennifer Lyon Gardner, University of Texas at Austin; Daniel Arriaga, University of Texas at Austin; Kelsey Hassevoort, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; Nathan Meier, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

In his 2021 NORDP conference keynote address, NSF Director Sethuraman Panchanathan called upon RD professionals to advance the frontiers of science by creating innovation ecosystems in which academics partner with community entities and other external stakeholders. This session will highlight the community-engagement infrastructure that RD professionals at multiple institutions have developed to help researchers identify potential community partners, facilitate research partnerships, and maintain institutional knowledge and relationships with those partners. Examples of processes, workshop agendas, and centralized RD resources will be provided. Participants will also be invited to share their own experiences with supporting community engagement using digital brainstorming platforms. (Intermediate)
